Master of Public Health (MPH) Program

Improving Public Health

The Public Health program prepares students to promote health, prevent disease, and protect the environment of our communities, locally and beyond. We achieve this through our evidence-based interdisciplinary approaches in education, research, practice, and community engagement. A Degree in A Growing Field

As a practitioner degree, the UC MPH program is designed to prepare students for roles that protect and improve the health of entire populations. As such, it is not a pathway into dental or medical school. Current data has shown that 73% of public health graduates (MPH) are employed post-graduation. Of employed MPH graduates, most work in healthcare and community-based settings (27%) private industry (24%) academia (19%), government (17%), and the nonprofit sector (12%). Of MPH graduates not employed, 15% enrolled in advanced education (e.g., PhD); 5% entered a fellowship, internship, residency, volunteer, or service program; and 6% percent sought employment within one year post-graduation.

Skillset Required for an MPH Degree

To be successful in the MPH program, particularly in the epidemiology and biostats concentrations, interested applicants should have strong mathematical skills and be able to effectively analyze data sets using statistical software packages such as SAS, R, or SPSS.  Although these skills may not be required for all courses, the principal concepts of data analysis and interpretation must be mastered and demonstrated by all MPH graduates. A student who will do well in our program is one who is a self-starter, who is excited and passionate about public health and who possesses the confidence and skillset to independently go out into the community to cultivate ideas, opportunities, and relationships. To this point, UC’s MPH program allows students to choose between seven unique concentration areas that let them develop in-demand skills all the while working in real-world settings.

The U.S. News & World Report ranks the best graduate schools in the United States. Our MPH program was ranked 89th out of 195 public health programs and schools, which are accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health.

The placement rate is based on the cohort of UC MPH students who graduated in the academic year 2018-2019. Placement includes 1) employed, 2) continuing education/training and 3) not seeking employment by choice (CEPH 2020 annual report). Masters CEPH Accredited

The UC MPH program is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the nationally recognized accrediting body for both schools of public health and public health programs.

STEM Designated

All UC MPH concentrations are science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) designated.

Professional Networking

UC MPH students have the opportunity to learn from internationally recognized faculty and network with local public health leaders to build their professional network. Our program offers opportunities to interact with leading public health professionals from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC), the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UC Health), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), regional and local health departments, and more.
