Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center. Since our Department was founded in 1970, its educational, clinical, and research activities have grown dramatically. Our residency program provides a broad range of experiences and teaching in all of the subspecialties. The program is approved by the Accreditation Committee for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) with a 10-year cycle length, and offers ACGME-approved fellowships in pain management, cardiothoracic anesthesia, critical care, OB anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, and a new fellowship in regional anesthesia.

The Department of Anesthesiology at UC provides services for nearly 50,000 anesthetics annually in over 50 anesthetic sites across UC Health, primarily at The University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC).   UCMC is home to one of the few nationally certified major adult burn treatment centers in the nation; the region's only Level I Trauma Center, and active solid organ transplantation programs. The department also provides anesthesia services at the West Chester Hospital, West Chester Ambulatory Surgical Center, and the Lindner Center of Hope. Our interventional pain program sees over 9,000 patients annually both at UCMC and at the department's free-standing Pain Management Center in West Chester, Ohio. Our Critical Care Medicine team manages patients in 40 beds in 3 separate ICUs, as well as all ECMO patients in the health system.  Our Perioperative Medicine program includes two outpatient preoperative clinics (The Center for Perioperative Care at UCMC and WCH), Inpatient Consult teams at UCMC and WCH, and our newly formed POCUS service and educational curriculum.

UCMC residents acquire their pediatric anesthesia training at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CHMC) which is ranked #1 in the nation among all Honor Roll hospitals in the US News & World Report’s best children’s hospital ranking in 2020-21.  With more than 694 registered beds, Cincinnati Children’s had more than 1.25 million patient encounters and served patients from all 50 states and 51 countries.

The Pediatric Anesthesia Department at Cincinnati Children's performs over 25,000 anesthetics and 5,000 pain consults each year. Children's performs all types of surgeries, including cardiac, neurological, craniofacial, transplantation, and major spine operations. Cincinnati Children's anesthesia faculty are internationally recognized in anesthesia for premature infants, fetal surgery, pediatric cardiac surgery, difficult airway problems, and chronic pain conditions.

Our residency provides state-of-the-art facilities, cutting edge NIH-funded research, focused didactics, and a wide range of advanced training. The intimate size of our residency program, coupled with the wide variety and high complexity of cases at UC, provides a unique learning experience for residents that is matched by few programs.
